These breakout sessions instructions serve as guidelines to both facilitators and participants.
Process: Participants will go through basic data literacy concepts in the following core areas: data acquisition, data analysis, data visualization. This will be in the format of a round table workshop where participants will break out into groups facilitated by an expert in each of these three areas. This will serve as the foundation for the next two days where the participants will break out into groups & further develop their ideas into prototypes.
Goal: To gain practical hands on skills on finding, working with and presenting data in order to create stories, projects and platforms that have positive impact on the society and to the public. To begin to seed ideas for how publicly available government data can be used to solve problems raised by dBootcamp participants.
Guidance for Facilitators (Mentors/Trainers): At least 1 facilitator/mentor will assign themselves to small groups of participants, based on the scope of their expertise. For the project ideation, the mentor will serve as rapporteur for the group (to capture feedback / input in a pithy way), ideally using a laptop (or notepad, if necessary). Participants need not write responses, but should be encouraged to brainstorm fluidly (including give-and-take between participants).
Process: Participants break into ‘mixed stakeholder user groups’ (i.e. each group comprised of representative mixture of participant types: coder, OD entrepreneur, media, academic, civil society). Each group to have maximum of 7. Participants will learn and practice working with structured data and spreadsheets, analyze and visualize data. They will also further develop their project ideas and form teams around those ideas.
Goal: Use yesterday’s takeaways as a launchpad to dig deeper into the projects ideas from yesterday. Participants will use this time to define the scope of their projects further, to design a “framework” to build / work on their projects/ideas.
Start Brainstorming: Start brainstorming process. Ex: what tool/service/product/content would you create? Brainstorm topics or problems that the right data could help to solve. How would you work with other members of your group to do this?
What Data Sets Will You Need / Will You Use? Draw out simple sketches of the idea/app; add these to Hackdash.
NOTE: Groups should ID a spokesperson/group lead, to deliver a 3-minute report-back on idea(s) generated during this session (and next steps discussed, if any). The goal is to catalyze participants to collaborate / coalesce around one project idea& start thinking about action.

One facilitator will serve as rapporteur (with own laptop or notepad). Participants need not write responses, but should be encouraged to brainstorm fluidly (including give-and-take between participants). Participants to break out mid-morning to begin building out the first ‘rough drafts’ of their projects/apps/platforms.
Process: Teams will finalize their projects and learn how to “pitch” them. The day ends with project pitches and group-led decisions around next steps and direction for meetups which will take place over the following six months.
Goal: Experience the full life-cycle of storytelling and communicating with data.Network within multi-disciplinary teams, seed ideas for developing current projects and future projects.

As yesterday, one facilitator will serve as rapporteur (with own laptop or notepad). Participants need not write responses, but should be encouraged to brainstorm fluidly (including give-and-take between participants). Groups will be asked to develop the ‘pitch’ during this session & a further breakout, so facilitators should help organize thoughts generated, to enable development of smooth summary / pitch.
